National Christmas Tree and the Pathway of Peace
December 5, 2008 – January 1, 2009

Throughout the month of December, the National Christmas tree and the Pathway of Peace light up the Ellipse with holiday cheer . The festivities begin on at 5:00 on December 4th with the Christmas tree lighting. (Free tickets are distributed on a first-come first served basis, on Saturday, November 1, 2008, beginning at 8:00 a.m. at the Ellipse Visitor Pavilion.) Then, every evening through January 1, the tree is lit from dusk until 11 p.m.  Nightly performances on the Ellipse stage feature choirs, dancers, and musicians. Weeknight performances begin at 6:00 p.m. Weekend performances begin at 4:00 pm. For more information, call (202) 208-1631.


Presidential Inauguration
January 20, 2009

Witness history as Barack Obama is sworn in as the 44th president of the United States. Events will include the swearing in ceremony, the inaugural parade, and a several black-tie balls around the city. Many events require tickets, but a large portion of the parade route will be open to public. More information to come.

Fireworks on the Mall
